Dish Network vs Direct TV - Which is Best?

Id finally had enough of cable after their last service hike. It was time to join the masses of satisfied satellite customers and make the big switch.

But, which one to choose? After all, Id been a tried-and-true cable buyer for so long; I had no idea which satellite provider was best.

Oh, just pick one, my neighbor told me. Theyre all the same.

That couldnt be right, I thought.

Or could it?

So I began a month-long saga of satellite TV research, comparing Dish Network vs Direct TV every which way until I knew every last detail about each service.

Much to my familys despair, I was determined to find out everything I could about the satellite providers available, and make an informed consumer choice.

And the problem is, most sites that pretend to tell where to find the best deals are just plain awful.

Now, I did find three that were worthwhile. To find out which ones those are, you have to scroll down to the bottom of this story where youll find the links.

The good news, of course, is that there are only two companies to choose from Dish Network and Direct TV. Considering how hard it was to find many differences between the two (and ultimately decide which one was best), I sure was glad there werent others.

My first concern was whether or not I could use both companies where I live. That wasnt a problem for me, but a friend was told that Direct TV could not provide a signal in his neighborhood due to some large oak trees in the neighbors yard which interfered with their signal. But, he told me, since the signal from Dish Network came from the opposite direction (go figure), he was able to sign on with them making his decision easier than mine.

Next, I looked at service.

Both companies provided about the same level of service for relatively the same price. Packages for both Dish Network and Direct TV begin at about $19.99 a month, with their most useful family packages ranging around $50-$60.

I did find that Direct TV offered more comprehensive sports packages, including the NFL Sunday Ticket (hooray!), as well as packages covering all of the major college and professional sports teams. They also sport fewer blackout dates in many of the big cities like Philadelphia, making their packages well worth the extra money.

While Direct TV also offers other less-popular international sports such as cricket, rugby and soccer, Dish Network tends to concentrate more on the international sports coverage, according to many of the people I talked to.

One of the things that stood out among the Dish network programming seemed to be their variety of Latino and International channels and shows. For those looking for non-American (non-English) programming, Dish might be the way to go.

Since both companies offered all-digital packages, loads of high definition channels and plenty of individual packages to choose from, my next concern was in regards to set-up fees and installation.

Its true that both providers officially charge for equipment and installation, however, unless youre the kind of person who walks onto a car lot and just pays sticker price, you shouldnt ever have to pay for this.

Both Dish Network and Direct TV continually offer a variety of promotions and specials for first-time users that provide basic installation and equipment for free, in addition to a myriad of coupons and gift certificates that can be redeemed for additional equipment and/or services including 1-3 months of free service; free pay-per-view movies; channel upgrades and more.

So, on to the million dollar question: which service is better?

Believe it or not, after all that research I came away convinced that neither service outranks the other in more than a few small areas. Both offer between 180-250 channels, a variety of comprehensive sports packages (although Direct TV seems to provide more professional sports game options for the all-around sports lover), 100% all-digital and High Definition packages. And they do this for relatively the same price.

In the end, I chose Direct TV simply because they offered the NFL Sunday Ticket and Dish didnt. Boy, am I glad I did!

As promised, Direct TV has given my family more than 250 channels to choose from, loads of sporting events, music concerts and pay-per-view movies. Weve never enjoyed such a crystal clear picture before, and I am happy to report that weve only lost our signal once, and that was during a major snow storm last winter that ended up knocking out the electricity, so we wouldnt have been able to watch TV anyway.

And, by the time the electricity came back on, so did our satellite signal! (Our neighbors with cable werent so lucky their signal was out for three days. Hah!)

Am I glad I ditched cable? You bet I am! I have a clearer picture, more channels to choose from and hassle free service, all for a fraction of the cost!

Over regulation of our free markets is stifling our growth in America and killing the next superstar Entrepreneurs. Lets discuss just how bad it really is. Lets us discuss Ray Kroc, founder of McDonalds and the Father of Franchising. In this philosophical discussion let us look at history for a moment shall we? If Ray Kroc had to pay $45,000 to create disclosure documents to franchise right out of the gate, could he have still had the capital to do it? Would he have wanted too? What if he had to pay an additional $15,000 per year to stay registered in all the states; another $10,000 to $20,000 to keep up with the law changes and case law? Could he have actually stayed in business?

If Ray Kroc in those early days had to pay $25,000 for financial audits could he have survived? If the number of accountants willing to do audits were cut in half due to current errors and omissions insurance and peer review costs would Ray Kroc have been able to juggle that during his first five years traveling the country and sleeping in hotel rooms, while building the business? Remember Ray Kroc was not married to wealth like the late Sam Walton who toured the country in a motor home looking at sites and studying the competition. Ray Kroc and Sam Walton both had to do it the hard way, but Ray Kroc was doing it out of cash flow. With the current problems in complying with all the accounting audit issues in franchising after the most recent Sarbaines Oxley Law causing delays of necessary audits in a timely fashion due to fear of violations in the accounting industry, demand for more audits in all sectors causing serious supply and demand issues getting an audit done on time for franchise registration renewals is tough?

Could Ray Kroc have accomplished this too, along with the additional costs and state registration deadlines? Wait we are not done yet. If Ray Kroc had to comply with all these proposed rule changes and existing rules and revise his disclosure documents each time an attorney created case law which might be detrimental to the over all system, could he have survived in the first five years? Yes or No? If Ray Kroc had to deal with all the different state laws and contradictions in Federal Trade Commission rules, could he have done it? Remember his first stores were in Cal-if-Forn-ia (Arnold Humor) and Illinois. I submit to you that Ray Kroc could not have done what he did and McDonalds would never have come to be. I also submit to you that NPR would be closing its doors and gone off the air this year if it were not for his wifes donations. Ronald McDonald House would not be available either. Millions of Americans would not have learned customer service or had that first job to teach them such important aspects business. The State of Idaho, where Simplot Potatoes grows its crop would not have made the profits and paid the tax income which allowed that great state to prosper. The Beef industry would have also been severely impacted, how would that industry have faired in the heated mass media hysteria of Mad Cow or the droughts causing cattle to be taken to early slaughter. Those frivolous lawsuits in Canada about being fat would leave our Canadian neighbors with nothing to bitch about and we wouldnt want that? Also the reality of the need for tort reform example of spilt coffee would never have existed? Do you doubt what I am saying? Well then Grinding It Out Ray Krocs book can be found still and it ought to be required reading for all Federal Trade Commission employees who have never had to make a payroll and any attorney who has never made a legitimate living in a business of their own before commentary on this proposed set of rules. It appears that the word smiths are out in full force and we are maintaining an on-going dialogue from a topic proposed in 1995, with comments in 1997 and 1999 at a time when much of the those comments are in fact irrelevant here in 2004. A more relevant discussion would be how best to separate out the business opportunity rules from the franchise rule and then close the Federal Trade Commissions franchising division all together since no problems perceived or known currently exist. Put Ray Kroc in the same shoes as any of the current up and coming home grown entrepreneurial superstars of today, being stifled under a Tsunami of tort law and a Hurricane of over regulation. Why cant we end this storm, why are we unwilling to see the truth at the Federal Trade Commission? And that is just one of many agencies Ray Kroc would have to deal with today, think about it.

How To Fight A New York Speeding Ticket at the Traffic Violations Bureau

The first step is to compute how many points are involved with the New York State speeding ticket you have been given.

The following chart will help you figure this out:

1 - 10 mph over speed limit - 3 points

11 - 20 mph over speed limit - 4 points

21 - 30 mph over speed limit - 6 points

31 - 40 mph over speed limit (possible suspension) - 8 points

More than 40 mph over speed limit (possible suspension) - 11 points

Points are measured from the date of offense (even if you are convicted years later). So when adding the possible points for a newly issued speeding ticket. you must go back 18 months from the date of the new ticket and determine how many other points you have on your record. Also, three speeding convictions within 18 months will result in an automatic revocation in your driving privileges for 6 months.

The next step is to determine whether your case is returnable at a Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) court or not. There are two, very different traffic court systems in New York State and, therefore, this determination is important for you to understand what you can and cannot do. If you are not within the TVB, then usually you can resolve the case by a plea deal.

The TVB courts cover any New York traffic ticket issued in New York City (Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island), western Suffolk, Buffalo and Rochester. A New York speeding ticket issued in any other place within New York State will not be a TVB court.

The reason this is an important inquiry is that TVB courts generally do not allow any type of deal-making or plea bargaining. Rather, you must either plead guilty or not guilty and, if you plead not guilty, you are given a hearing where you will either win or lose. In this "all or nothing" court, it really pays to retain an New York traffic lawyer to fight your case. That is, a New York traffic attorney who is experienced and knowledgeable in fighting speeding tickets at the TVB. Putting aside the emotions involved with fighting your own case, most motorists do not know how to listen carefully or cross examine. Rather, they basically ignore the officer's testimony, fail to ask any questions and, instead, just tell the judge their story. This incomplete approach is not recommended and is clearly not effective.

If you do fight your own TVB speeding ticket, listen carefully to the officer's testimony and even take notes. If the officer omits critical testimony (ex., date, time, location, direction, your ID information), then point this out to the judge after the officer rests. Similarly, if the officer gives testimony which is inconsistent with his other testimony or the information on the ticket, then likewise point this out to the judge.

For instance, I once was fighting a NYC speeding ticket when the officer testified that the motorist was proceeding east bound on the Long Island Expressway. The ticket, however, indicated W/B or west bound. After the officer rested, I showed the ticket to the judge who promptly dismissed the case.

Even without an omission or inconsistency, you should still ask thoughtful questions of the officer. For example, if your defense is that the officer pulled over the wrong car, then ask him where was he when he first saw your car, did he have to pass any other cars to apprehend your car, and how long did it take him or apprehend you. These types of questions build on your defense.

Also, ask to the see the officer's notes. Read them and determine whether his notes are consistent with his testimony. Any discrepancy should be pointed out to the judge. Also, do not be afraid to ask the officer to decipher illegible portions of his notes.

After your cross examination of the officer, it is time for you to offer your defense. Speak slowly and clearly. Hand up any evidence supporting your defense such as photos, witness statements or diagrams. Keep in mind that the judge hears many, many such cases and, therefore, you should not be repetitive or rambling about irrelevant information.

One last tip. Prior to fighting your case, watch the judge and how he handles other cases. Does he listen and take notes? Does he seem impatient or distracted? If you are concerned about whether you will get a fair hearing, ask for a new date. It is unlikely that you will get the same judge on the next assigned date.
